Street photography, or the art of capturing the urban environment, is a very popular photographic discipline these days, but it is something that I have done very little of. I am not a fan of cities, or built up areas, much preferring the raw nature of the countryside and so this challenge is really going to push me to try things I’ve never done before.
I don’t have a clear definition of what a small city is, but one thing this challenge is clear about is that a large town is not good enough. It must be a city. I have a few ideas for how to complete this challenge, but I need to find the right opportunity. I need to come back from this exploration with a handful of decent shots.
So it looks as though I’ll be heading to London in 2012 then? Or maybe not… it could be any capital city in the world (perhaps tying this in with the Landscape challenges?) Either way this is definitely a hard challenge for me, taking me out of my comfort zone by some distance.
So, not only do I have to get myself into the mindset of a street photographer, I now also have to start approaching strangers and taking their portrait? I think, of all the challenges set out in 2012, this one scares me the most – but likewise, it will also give me the most satisfaction if I ever manage to do it.
